Amulets
Amulets are decorative charms, such as necklaces, rings and bracelets, worn by people in order to benefit from their magical properties (Pickering 1999). Fossils of various kinds, notably sharks' teeth, have been used in amulets. Fossil amulets were sometimes believed to provide protection against contracting illness, either generally or relating to specific ailments.
In an example of sympathetic magic, amulets made from fossil shark's teeth were once hung around the necks of Swiss children to relieve pain when their teeth were erupting (Zammit-Maempel 1989).
