Interesting that in that era they knew little about nutrition, most of the advances in sports nutrition have been made quite recently, but they hit upon the fact, that to maximise slow burn enery over a long period, you need fat - which has the highest ratio of calories to weight, and does not produce the blood sugar spikes associated with higher glycaemic foods.

I met ranulph fiennes , and he too used high fat butter and so on.
