Cover design of Wallace's book The Wonderful Century , dated 1898
This shows the front cover of the second edition of Wallace's book The Wonderful Century. It is dark green with an embossed gold pattern of geometric flower-like shapes. The dates 1801, 1825, 1850, 1870, 1890 and 1900 are scattered between the shapes.
Wallace wrote a letter to his daughter Violet in 1898 while compiling the book. He asked her if she knew of anyone who might have ideas on 'a good emblematic design' for the front cover. It is not known who designed it in the end, but it must have met with Wallace's approval, as he was a man of very high standards.
