List of ten names entitled The Chief Humanitarians of the Nineteenth Century in the Opinion of Alfred Russel Wallace, undated, circa 1913.
Wallace was a keen social commentator and wrote widely on socialism. This manuscript, hand-written by Wallace, lists the humanitarians of the time, mainly writers, poets and socialists. Notable entries are the social reformer Robert Owen, the socialist Edward Bellamy, the poet [Percy Bysshe] Shelley and the writer Leo Tolstoy.
It is not known why the list was prepared, but it gives us an idea of who Wallace thought was worthy at the time.
