hide detailed image description

A view of the coastline from Botany Bay to Port Jackson, with the main features and bearings labelled in black ink. The sea in the foreground occupies approximately the lower quarter of the composition, and the sky the upper three-quarters, with the coastline in a narrow band between them. The land is coloured grey-green with some pale pink in the more distant hills, and is edged in some places with white cliffs. Some trees have been drawn on the ridge to the right of Cape Banks, and a flag staff alongside another building can be seen on the south head of Port Jackson, to the right of the drawing. The sea is represented by a gradated pale blue wash overlaid with irregular grey and blue brush work in the foreground which creates a tonal effect. The drawing is underlined with a black ink base-line, and inscribed in the margin below it with the title in black ink.
