First Fleet artwork collection

A bird facing to the left and perched on a branch, against a plain background. The bird has a grey head with brown around the eye, a pale brown to chestnut breast, and brown back, wing and tail. The drawing is framed by a pencil border and annotated in ink and pencil.

• The drawing is annotated in ink at the bottom "About one fifth of the Natural size."
• The drawing is signed "Watling, Delt." towards the bottom of the picture, but is undated.
• The drawing is inscribed in ink at top right with the number "18.". This refers to the catalogue list compiled by John Latham c. 1801 which was acquired with the drawings, and is filed with them at the end of the Watling Drawings series.
• The drawing is annotated in pencil at the top "Ash-headed Falcon La MS". This has been copied in ink at bottom, "Ash headed Falcon Lathams MS". ("Lathams MS" is the catalogue list compiled by John Latham referred to above.)
• The bird has more recently been identified as either the Brown Goshawk Accipiter fasciatus or the Collared Sparrowhawk Accipiter cirrocephalus in Hindwood, K.A. (1970)
• The drawing is annotated in pencil at top "Lambert Drawing II 1". This refers to a related set of drawings from the collections of the 13th Earl of Derby, held in the Library at Knowsley Hall, Lancashire.
