Bird facing to the right, perched on a tree branch against a plain background. The bird's head is black with a long bill which is black above and pale blue below. It has a white throat and breast, and dark grey wings and tail. The drawing is framed by a pencil border and annotated in ink and pencil.

  • The drawing is annotated in ink at bottom left "Two thirds the Natural size Native name Tharro-bee-rang".
  • The drawing is unsigned and undated.
  • The drawing is inscribed in ink at top right with the number "26.". This refers to the catalogue list compiled by John Latham c. 1801 which was acquired with the drawings, and is filed with them at the end of the Watling Drawings series.
  • The work is annotated in pencil at top "Hook-billed shrike Var- Sup 2. 70 V". This has been copied in ink at bottom right, "Hook billed Shrike var Lathams Syn Suppt. 2 p 70". The page reference is to Latham's Second Supplement to the General Synopsis of Birds (1802).
  • This bird was more recently identified as the Grey Butcher-bird Cracticus torquatus in Hindwood K. A. (1970).
  • The drawing is annotated in pencil at bottom right "Vol 3. 23.". This refers to a related set of drawings from the collections of the 13th Earl of Derby, held in the Library at Knowsley Hall, Lancashire.
  • There is an additional label measuring 8.9 x 1.3 cm. mounted alongside the drawing to the right that reads "Note refers to Lambert Drawing" (see note above). According to the data sheet this was cut out from the paper on which the drawing was previously mounted.
