  • The drawing at the top of the sheet is inscribed in black ink beneath it "NANBERRY, a Native Boy of PORT JACKSON, living with Mr White - the Surg.-n Gen.-l". The drawing below is inscribed at the bottom with a grey ink and wash "Scale of Feet" (to the ratio of 1 foot = 2.65 cm.) and the title "IMPLEMENTS of PORT-JACKSON 1-- A peculiar kind of throwing stick with which they dig for Fern Root, 2, 3, 4, & 6 Different kinds of Swords & Clubs ---- 5-- A peculiar Shield the only one of the kind yet seen ----".
  • The drawing is signed and dated at lower right "GEO: RapeR # 1792 ~".
  • The drawing is inscribed in pencil at bottom left with the number "3", at bottom right "2", and on the reverse "17".
  • Nanberry was adopted at the age of about 9 or 10 by surgeon-general John White in April-May 1789, and later served with the British Navy on HMS Reliance from 1795, and with Matthew Flinders on the Investigator in 1803 (ref. R.J. Lampert in Wheeler and Smith, 1988, p. 68).
