| Jane Colden
(1724-1766)
Nature print of leaf, c. 1740/50s.
Ink on paper, 305 x 180 mm.
Jane Colden is considered the first American born
woman botanist. The daughter of Cadwalleder Colden
a successful Scottish doctor, she married Dr William
Farquhar in 1759 but tragically died in 1766 soon
after giving birth to her only child.
This is an example of Jane Colden’s nature prints. The technique
of taking prints from dried leaves and flowers was a popular pastime
in the eighteenth century and Colden was thought to be quite skilled
in this method of printing.
