Acer palmatum, although there are more than 100 species of maple worldwide, only one species (Acer campestre) is native to the UK.

Joan Gideon Loten (1710-1789) was Governor of Ceylon from 1752 to 1757. During this time he used the services of Pieter Cornelius de Bevere (1722-died before 1781) to compile a remarkable record of the natural history of Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
