Arthur Harry Church (1865-1937)
Geranium pratense, 1905-1909.
Chinese white, pencil and watercolour, 318 x 195 mm.
The drawing depicts a detailed cross section of the Geranium,
Geranium pratense and is a typical example of Arthur
Church's diagrams of flowers.
Many drawings similar to the one shown were published in
Church's book Types of Floral Mechanism (1908). Using
bold simplicity, he illustrated the complex internal structures
of flowering plants in a style which still seems remarkably
modern even today.
