This fine portrait by an unknown artist depicts the famous
geologist Charles Lyell. His controversial book Principles
of Geology (1830) represents one of the most important books
in the history of science. It laid the foundations for the
modern study of geology and influenced the evolutionary therories
of Charles Darwin.
