Mark Ines Russell (1949- )
Weevil (Rhopalomesites tardyi), 1998.
Watercolour, 495 x 360 mm.
Mark Russell is an example of a scientist turned artist.
Initially trained as an entomologist, his combined love of
beetles and art resulted in a series of exceptional drawings
of weevils. His watercolours, worked in the super-realist
style, have received praise for their outstanding scientific
accuracy.
This drawing of the holly weevil is an excellent example
of his microscopic attention to detail.
