Margaret Ursula Mee (1909-1988)
(BROMELIACEAE) Bromelia anticantha, c.1958.
Watercolour on watermarked paper, 660 x 478 mm.
Margaret Mee's name will be forever associated with her
interest in conserving the Amazon rainforests. Her exquisite
drawings of plants, especially the bromeliads and orchids,
did much to increase awareness of the diversity of plants
from this region. She helped to draw international attention
to the damage that commercial clearance of the rainforest
was having on this unique and diverse habitat.
This fine and colourful drawing of a bromeliad (BROMELIACEAE
Bromelia anticantha) is a wonderful example of her detailed
work.
