Thomas Alan Stephenson (1898-1961)
Iridescent sea weeds, North Rock, Bermuda, [1952].
Watercolour and gouache, 357 x 254 mm.
Thomas Stephenson was a professional zoologist with a passion
for marine biology. During his life he studied the animals
that live on the coasts in many parts of the world. He became
famous for his study of the beautiful and delicate sea anemones.
Stephenson was an accomplished artist. In contrast with his
standard illustrative work required for scientific publications,
this impressionistic study of seaweeds represents a great
love of marine life.
