Acer palmatum, although there are more than 100 species of maple worldwide, only one species (Acer campestre) is native to the UK.

Steeped in the Victorian style of scientific illustration, John Keulemans' watercolours are very traditional in appearance. He was commissioned by leading scientific writers of the day to illustrate their publications.

He is best known for his illustrations of birds such as this detailed portrayal of the head of a cassowary.
