David Measures (1937- )
Comma butterflies, 1984.
Ball-point pen and watercolour, 293 x 220 mm.
David Measures' artwork has influenced a generation of natural
history artists. Not wishing to follow traditional methods
of scientific illustration, he chose instead to develop a
technique which enabled an immediate method of recording his
observations in the field.
This drawing is a fine example of his work. In a free and
fluid style, Measures records the result of closely observing
two comma butterflies during one summer's day in 1984.
