Nye (1975) stated:-

Melanchroia Hübner has been used incorrectly in the Noctuidae based on Phalaena leontia Stoll, 1790, the first of the, originally included species. The correct usage is in the Geometridae, Ennominae.

Fletcher (1979) stated:-

P. chephise was the spelling adopted by Prout, 1910, Trans. ent. Soc. Lond. 1910: 345, as first reviser, from a multiple original spelling in which both P. chephise and P. * Cephise were used, the former on page 182, the latter on page 248.

Parsons et al. (1999) included MELANCHROEA Agassiz, 1847; MELANDIA Boisduval, 1870; MILTOPARAEA Wallengren, 1861; and TARAXINEURA Warren, 1900 as junior synonyms of MELANCHROIA Hübner, 1819.

Parsons et al. (1999) included 7 species in the genus MELANCHROIA.
