About the Dino Directory
The Dino
Directory is a database of well-known dinosaurs. It does not contain all
dinosaurs - many hundreds more are known. Dinosaurs are included in this
database if the Natural History Museum holds a good image or reconstruction
of the dinosaur, so there must be enough known about the species to reconstruct
its probable shape. If you would like to comment on the site, or have ideas for its development, please use the feedback form.
Datacards and classroom activities:
Datafiles contain extended information on certain dinosaurs, aimed particularly at use in the classroom. You can print the cards out and download the spreadsheet to organise activities and experiment with the information. More...
Copyright:
All images are copyright the Natural History Museum and/or the original
artist. Images may be printed out or downloaded from this site for personal
reference only, provided they are not subsequently copied, published,
scanned, photographed, broadcast or reproduced in any way whatsoever.
If you wish to use an image for commercial or public purposes, please
contact NHM Image Resources (tel: 020 7942 5401). You are free to use these pages for classroom projects.
Colour: You may wonder why we do not use colour
images for the initial description of each dinosaur. This is because we
have no way of knowing what colour or patterns dinosaurs really had, and
it would be misleading to give the impression that we do. All colours
in the larger images are speculative, based on the colours present in
modern reptiles.
Development: The directory will be extended as
new images become available and new dinosaurs are reconstructed.
Launched in January 2001, The Dino
Directory was researched, designed and implemented by Dr Mike
Lowndes. The palaeontological consultant was Dr Angela Milner. Design updated in 2003 by Lisa Walley and Mike Sadka. New content added 2005 by Mike Lowndes, palaeontological consultancy by Joe Parish.
