| Overview | The UK Systematics
Forum aims to promote coordination and communication between the UK's collections-holding
institutions and the wider systematics community. In the Forum's initial
meeting in February 1994 the compilation of a UK directory of expertise
was identified as being central to this role.
The Forum first began to compile this directory in August 1994 by distributing a questionnaire to all collections-holding institutions, universities and specialist society memberships. As well as providing a useful directory to aid the flow of communication within the scientific community, the directory will provide demographic information which is currently being analysed for publication in a report. Anybody not currently on the directory is therefore urged to complete the on-line questionnaire for inclusion in the database. |
| Information Held | The directory holds information on UK systematists including: names, contact addresses, telephone and fax numbers, areas of expertise (including taxonomic, geographic and stratigraphic area) and brief resumes of current research activities. A number of search tools are available: |
| Simple Query | To search the entire
database for one or two key words, simply fill in the box, eg. "Jones",
"Oxford University", "Hemiptera", and hit the Run Query button.
| Structured Query | The structured form provides a set of specific fields (name, address, taxon, stratigraphy, geography) which can be searched for keywords. By specifying more fields a more precise set of experts will be produced to suit your requirements. NB The taxon field searches both for expertise and current research. If a particular taxa is not found, different levels of taxa and common names should be tried (usually available to phylum and/or division level). If a known expert is being sought we recommend you use this option. |
| Pick Lists | The directory is cross
referenced in the following areas:
| Taxa | The list of taxa used in this directory and associated questionnaire should be viewed simply as a means of identifying expertise to a phylum/division level: with classification in its present state of turmoil it is not intended as an accurate representation of current thinking, but merely an attempt to standardise across kingdoms. If you feel your area of expertise is not represented by any of those listed please e-mail E.Watson with the suggested name and suitable evidence (eg. references). The 'Protista' and 'Prokaryotae' lists are currently being reviewed. |
| Add Entry | The on-line questionnaire enables you to add your details to the directory. After submitting your details they will be validated and then added to the live directory. |
