TDWG Meetings:
TDWG 97 - The Highlights TDWG 97 was held at Academia Sinica in Taipei Taiwan the 14th and 15th November. in association with the IUBS 26th General Assembly and other related meetings A full report of this meeting is available on the TDWG website. On the first day of the meeting, the Project Management Team of the Species 2000 Project joined TDWG members for a working session led by Frank Bisby This session included discussion on how to extend the workings of TDWG to all organism groups and how the bionomenclatural codes differ. Other business session topics included progress reports of the various subgroups - these are detailed on the web site with some notes here: Collectors database: the collectors file, based on a number of sources, is intended to serve as a standard for data entry of botanical specimen records and to fill a gap in the categories of standardized information currently available in electronic data format. In the long term this file is intended to cover not only collectors, but authors of plant names and botanical works. So far there are not recommended forms.since many ambiguities may be produced at this stage. Barcodes: Barry Conn presented the information he has posted on the Web. Along with some technical information, these pages include a catalogue of herbaria using barcodes, a short description on how they use them and an e-mail contact for each. It is expected that these pages work as a repository of barcode uses as well as a discussion forum on the matter. Barry Conn also presented information on Red book categories, and it was agreed that this report accomplished the task of the subgroup (to report on national policies regarding Red Hook Categories). Taxonomic Literature 2: this subgroup has three goals: first to compile TL-2 abbreviations and make an index of keywords; second. to develop a set of rules and guidelines to create new abbreviations; third, to correct existing inconsistencies and eliminate ambiguities. Sponsored by USDA and IAPT, a group headed by Richard Pankhurst (Edinburgh) is capturing TL-2 abbreviations in a database. Currently, they are proofreading the entries and expect to complete this phase by the end of April. Other topics discussed in the business sessions included how to resolve the problems of failure to reach a quorum in the ballot of constitutional changes; election of officers and the sites for future meetings.
