The new TAPIR protocol makes it possible to retrieve data in user specified formats. Therefore, TAPIR-enabled biodiversity data sources mapped to TDWG standards can be used by standard applications that support data retrieval trough the HTTP GET method.
We demonstrate how Keyhole, a mapping tool with highly detailed satellite images can retrieve observational data directly from a TAPIR wrapper using its own XML language (“KML”). Many other applications are able to open data directly from the Internet through a URL and can potentially also access these biodiversity data sources.
