TDWG 2004 optional Field Trip

Thank you to the delegates who told us their preference before the Registration Site was active, and to those who have now formally registered.

***** FIELD TRIP BOOKINGS NOW CLOSED *****

Please check for last minute changes (especially departure time) on Saturday 9th (evening) at the Reception of the Heritage Hotel

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT FIELD TRIP BOOKINGS: We realise it is possible that delegates who have expressed interest in one of the two informal Field Trips may wish to include their wives/partners/travelling companions. It is not possible to indicate this on the Registration Site so please send e-mail to Adrian Rissoné <A.Rissone@nhm.ac.uk>) with "URGENT TDWG 2004 Field Trip" in the subject line by 11:00 GMT on 2 October.

If you have not yet formally registered for the Meeting please do so as soon as possible and indicate your Field Trip option. If you have already formally registered but not indicated that you wish to join a Field Trip, and have now changed your mind, please return to the RegOnline site and edit your delegate record. If you cannot do this please send e-mail to Adrian Rissoné <A.Rissone@nhm.ac.uk>) with "URGENT TDWG 2004 Field Trip" in the subject line. The deadline for registering for a Field Trip is 11:00 GMT on 2 October.

These two trips will run: details and costs are updated as follows:

Sunday 10 October 2004

A) Day round trip to Arthur's Pass on the Transalpine train

Departs at 8:15 am and passengers could ride to Arthur's Pass, arriving at around 10:30 am, or go all the way to the West Coast (Greymouth), arriving at 12:45. We would recommend the former due to all the nice walks in Arthur's Pass, and also because the train leaves Greymouth again at 1:45. The return to Christchurch from Arthur's Pass is at 3:57 pm and arrives at 6:05 pm. The cost is $NZ 108.

Please note that it will be cold and maybe windy in the mountains. Bring hats, gloves, and coats for sure, maybe extra rainwear.

This trip will be led by Joanna McCaffrey. Please report to Joanna at 07:30 in the reception area of the Heritage Hotel.

B) Day round trip to Kaikoura (including optional whale watching) on the Transcoastal train

Departs 7:30 am and arrives in Kaikoura (including whale watching) with whale watching at 10:10 am (coordinates with the second Whale Watch sailings each day). The train leaves Kaikoura (including whale watching) with whale watching at 4:05 and arrives in Christchurch at 7 pm. Cost for the train is $NZ 59 round trip (winter special). The Whale Watching will be an additional $NZ 125 unless we can secure a group discount. There is always the possibility that the boats won't go out due to swell, weather, etc. In that case, there is a 100% refund. If the boats do go out and whale's aren't sighted, the refund is 80%.

This trip will be led by Adrian Rissoné. Please report to Adrian at 06:45 in the reception area of the Heritage Hotel.

Transport will be organised from the Heritage Hotel to the railway station. The (small) cost will be payable on boarding so please have some cash with you.

Registration and Payment

In order to qualify for block booking rates we have arranged that the train and whale watching companies will send a single invoice. Individual delegates will "sign in" at the start of a trip to get their tickets. On Monday 11 October delegates will be asked to pay for the field trip at the Registration Desk. We are not yet sure that we can provide a credit card facility so please be prepared to pay in cash (ATM machines are plentiful in Christchurch).

We have block booked a certain number of tickets on each option, based on the number of delegates (and their preferences) registered for the Meeting so far. We will update the bookings for each trip until 11:00 GMT on 2 October. Therefore, please complete your registration and indicate your field trip preference by then. We cannot guarantee that a seat will be available on the train if you do not comply. If you have already registered but did not indicate your trip preference please return to the RegOnline site and edit your delegate record. If you cannot do this please send e-mail to Adrian Rissoné <A.Rissone@nhm.ac.uk>) with "URGENT TDWG 2004 Field Trip" in the subject line.
