Abstract

The uBio Taxonomic Information System
Remsen, David. uBio Project Developer, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, MA 02543

uBio is a system for indexing and organizing published biological information. It's function is to provide a system for non-expert managers of biological information that can enhance the organization, presentation, and retrieval of published data. This system is linked to a biological workgroup information system that allows diverse communities to collaborate, share, exchange and retrieve published taxonomic information.

This system preserves the integrity of intellectual ownership while increasing the reach of the taxonomic community to a potentially large supportive community of information providers. The system consists of three primary components. The core is a taxonomic name server whose function is to accurately represent both factual and subjective components of classification and nomenclature. Any vernacular or published name that appears in recorded form is a candidate for indexing within this server. An abstracted network service provides a stable access point for accessing name server data elements. A control component provides network management tools and accountability of both usage and contribution.
