Abstract

The Prometheus taxonomic model - The drivers behind its development and its potential uses
Pullan, Martin. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Prometheus taxonomic model has relevance to both the development of taxonomy and to the management of taxonomic and more general biological information. This presentation will focus on the drivers behind the formulation of the model - why we think that it is important to recognise and separate conceptual frameworks within taxonomy, how that separation can be achieved, and the implications of this approach to the construction of names standards. The presentation will conclude by describing a model system in which the combination of an extant automated identification system and the Prometheus data model can overcome some of the problems created by the recognition of conflicting taxonomic frameworks.
