TDWG ECONOMIC BOTANY SUBGROUP REPORT, NOVEMBER 1999

The 1999 TDWG meeting has been and gone. Mark Jackson kindly presented a summary of the subgroup report at the meeting in Harvard on October 31. At that meeting the members present strongly urged that the Economic Botany Data Collection Standard should be available on the web by the next TDWG meeting and that information regarding how the standard might be implemented should be made available. These are ideas that also came out strongly in the responses to the questionnaire circulated to the subgroup earlier this year and it is our intention to make these happen in the next year. In the meantime Internet SEPASAL provides an example of the standard in use (http://www.rbgkew.org.uk/ceb/sepasal/internet/).

As ever, revisions and improvements depend on feedback from users. Thanks very much to all of you who replied to the questionnaire. I would also welcome your comments on the full report.

Regarding the Economic Botany Data Collection Standard, I would particularly like to hear of :
comments on how to improve the user-friendliness of the standard
areas where help with interpretation of the standard would be useful
any uses that are currently difficult to describe using the standard
any required additions or changes to the standard

The more specific the comments the better!

Also please send reactions about the suggestions for future standards to be considered by the Economic Botany subgroup:
Credibility rating for Information Collected on Use of Botanicals
Biographical Information
Archiving tools
Plus any new proposals for standards related to uses of plants

Lastly, I would like to keep the current subgroup mailing list up to date. Please encourage new contributors to get in touch and please let me know if you wish to be removed from the subgroup mailing list.
