M C Cooke Lecture on Tuesday 13th April

This lecture will be entitled “A Welcome to Wellcome: Understanding Wellcome Images”. Dr Laura Pastorelli, who is Biomedical Images Coordinator at the Wellcome Trust, will present it. It will introduce Henry Wellcome and explain some of the background to the Wellcome Trust, Wellcome Library and the Wellcome Collection, ending on a brief explanation of Wellcome Images, with some stunning examples from the collection.

Those who were fortunate enough to see Dr Pastorelli’s contribution when the Quekett visited the Wellcome Collection late last year will know that this will be an interesting and entertaining evening.

The lecture will be held in the Dorothea Bate Room at the Natural History Museum, starting shortly after 6:00 pm.

Visit to “Curious – The Craft of Microscopy” a photographic exhibition by Susanna Edwards on Tuesday 13th April

This exhibition is in the Qvist Gallery in the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. This is at 35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, which is a very short walk from Holborn underground station.

The visit will start at about 2:00pm, and it is hoped that Susanna Edwards will be on hand to talk to us about the ideas behind the exhibition.

This has been timed so that members who so wish will be able to attend both events. It is a short and (usually!) fast journey from Holborn station to South Kensington on the Piccadilly line.

Visitors are most welcome to either of these events, but are advised to contact Dennis Fullwood at meetings@quekett.org for further details of the locations.

Theft from Herts Optical Services - can you help?

About two weeks ago a large, black Wild M40 inverted microscope was stolen from Herts Optical Services, Victoria Street, St Albans. It did not have its transformer and one eyepiece was lost during the theft. It had a sticker for N.W Area Health Authority, but this may have been removed. If any member notices this coming up for sale anywhere, perhaps they could contact Richard at Herts Optical Services on 01727 859392.

I know they would appreciate any help.

Microscopium 2008

For the 2nd year this was held in St Albans where ‘The Hendersons’ provided the hospitality of their local church hall and presided over the tea counter. The enthusiasm was such that purchases were made as the tables were being set up though there was plenty of equipment for those who arrived later in the day. There were both brass and more modern microscopes for sale along with a range of accessories, books and the odd ‘home made gadget’.

Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
There is an exhibition of some superb macro and micro photographs at RBG Kew. They are displayed in the Nash Conservatory near the main gate. All of the images are plant related, well it is Kew!

Macro, light micro and false colour SEM techniques have been employed to produce some stunning pictures.

The exhibition will run until 28th September this year and I would encourage anyone who is thinking of visiting RBG Kew between now and then to have a look. Unfortunately I can find nothing about the exhibition on Kew's web site. (But here is a link to another site with further details)

Member Spike Walker has had two of his images selected for the Wellcome Image Awards. These fantastic images range over a number of subjects and can be seen by following this link (opens in new page). Spike's images are numbers 9 and 16 (second and third rows).

You may have seen some of them when they were shown at the end of the BBC news at 10 pm on Tuesday 11th March. Must be a first for this type of image to make the main news broadcast of the day.

Well worth a look. Also see below

3rd October 2007

The Quekett Exhibition was held last Saturday (28 September) at the Natural History Museum. There was a wide range of exhibits from the members and we were delighted to welcome the London Freshwater Group as an exhibitor. We also welcomed many visitors, including several from the Museum members group.

This year a Leitz / Leica Timeline was presented with a variety of microscopes dating from the mid 19th century to the latest 21 century models.

The photographic competition and slide competition were well supported; the photographic images illustrating a wide range of microscopic techniques and samples. Clearly image stacking is the way of the future! A detailed report and some of the images are on the members’ site.
