The Club's Journal, published continuously since 1868, represents a unique and valuable archive of microscopical investigations. A wealth of information is contained within its pages concerning all aspects of microscopy. Here you will find articles on techniques and apparatus, microscopic objects and organisms - many written by authorities in their field.
Few members will, however, have had the opportunity to study the entire contents of the Journal at first hand. Complete runs of the Journal are confined to a very few academic libraries, not readily accessible to Club members. Sets appear on the market only rarely, and are then a very costly purchase.
| Now, however, the first 36 volumes covering the period 1868 to 1992 are available on CD-ROM |
The initial suggestion for the project came from Savile Bradbury, current Librarian of the Club. That it has come to successful fruition is the result of a happy coincidence of circumstances. These include: the existence of Michael Newstead's most comprehensive index which was kindly made available by the author to the Club as a wordprocessor file, the growth in the number of members possessing multimedia home computers, the willingness of the Committee of the Club to allow disbinding (and subsequent rebinding!) of a set of the Journal, developments in Web Browser technology and HTML scripting that allow easy display and navigation of text and images and, not least, the magnificent bequest to the Club by Leslie Martin that has allowed the pre-publication costs to be met.
The Journal is presented in facsimile : Text, plates, covers, advertisements, membership lists, etc. - nearly 19,000 pages in total, but uses Web Browser technology to provide comprehensive indexing facilities. Searches can be conducted under any of the following topics:
The Journal comes on four CDs and can be viewed using Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer (other browsers may be used, but have not been tested). It will operate on Windows 3.x, 95, 98 & NT or Apple Macintosh computers.
