A review of an outstanding CD-ROM - Brian Bracegirdle's catalogue of microscopes and accessories held by the Science Museum

A comparative review of two reasonably priced guides to the diatoms

A review of a new publication by Mike Samworth and Steve Gill aimed at amateur diatomists.

A review of 'How to Know the Freshwater Algae'

Some very useful information on where to find ultrabright white LEDs from many contributors

Review of Ernie Ives book on wood and microscopy: Most members at some meeting or other will have encountered the bearded Ernie Ives, with fine examples of marquetry, and a selection of what must be a superb library of slides of woods. Now he has made his experiences available to all by publishing a book on the subject, which John Garrett has kindly reviewed here

John Garrett has responded to my request for book reviews with a review of Patterson's 'Free-Living Freshwater Protozoa - A colour Guide'. John is somewhat diffident about his review, pointing out that he is an amateur - but this is what the Club is all about! We are all amateurs in one field or another, and what one amateur finds useful will surely be so to another. Although I have some pretensions to being a trained biologist, after reading John's review, Patterson's book has gone onto my booklist. I use a wide variety of reference works, many of which are aimed fairly and squarely at the amateur, including the excellent Naturalist Handbooks series published by Richmond Publishing Co.Ltd. More reviews will follow.

Another book review: 'Microscopical Life in Sphagnum'

Mike Samworth and Steve Gill have produced an excellent set of utilities to facilitate use of the Club Journal on CDROM. I have spoken to a number of people who have installed them and had a most enthusiastic response and unstinted praise. Unfortunately I have had a less than enthusiastic response to a request for reviews, which have been promised but have failed to materialise. I don't have room on my hard disk for these - an upgrade is definitely overdue - so I cannot do them justice, but here is a link to a full description of what they can do. There is also some other useful stuff on the disk. The price is a very modest £10. This enterprising duo have published or are in the process of publishing a whole range of rare works on CDROM, such as Cole's "Studies in Microscopical Science" which has been very positively reviewed by Brian Bracegirdle (Journal Editor). I was astonished to learn from Mike that the list now comprises no fewer than 75 titles, including many rare and/or expensive works which would otherwise be unavailable to the amateur (or professional) microscopist. This enterprise deserves the highest possible praise. Click here for a price list

Howard (Chico) Taylor, one of our American members, is an experienced microscopist and freshwater biologist, and has contributed a number of chapters of what promises to be a substantial book. Some more from him here

Savona Books are the official agents for the Club publications, and also have a wide range of second-hand books of interest to microscopists and others interested in Science. Click here for a link.
