THE 2005 PIRBRIGHT MEETING

Once again Queketts gathered at the beautiful Basingstoke Canal site to sample and examine what this lovely acquatic site could provide.

On the left members prepare their equipment
for the 'dip'. The lock gates which provided the
focus of interest can be seen in the background.
While above, Maurice Moss, Ken Jones (who
organised the expedition) Dennis Fullwood and
Eric Hollowday discuss the useful little Meopta
portable stand (this is described fully elsewhere
on this site.)

Maurice Moss, intrepid as ever, spared no efforts to acquire the samples he wanted!

Back at the Village Hall there was ample space to set up stands and equipment to examine our catch.

As a rotifer enthusiast I was sorry to find that there where not many of this particular group, probably because of the large number of water fleas, whose feeding behaviour interferes destructively with many rotifers. However two species were found; Asplanchna on the left, and Keratella on the right:

All in all, a very enjoyable day, and our thanks to Ken Jones, who organised it, and his wife, Bette, who looked after the refreshments!
