Advanced Green Algae Course The aim of the usually 3-day course is to provide training in identification and ecology of freshwater green algae. It is advantageous, but not essential, that participants will already have attended an introductory course on algal identification and treat the course as a refresher and a chance to get more detailed knowledge of this important and diverse group in freshwater and terrestrial environments. A number of more general lectures will be given, especially topics showing the relevance of green algae to the work of the Environment Agency, SEPA and water plc's, including future developments such as implementation of the EU's Water Framework Directive. Dr David John and
Prof. Brian Whitton give the majority of the lectures.
The course combines
lectures, tutorials and practicals. The laboratory work will emphasise
how three new aids make it much easier to identify algae, especially when
all three are used together. The aids are The Freshwater Algal Flora
of the British Isles (2002, John, Whitton & Brook), the CD of
images included with this Flora, and an interactive identification CD
for the 300 commonest green algae in the British Isles. The last, which
has been produced as a contract for the Environment Agency, uses the latest
version of the Lucid software developed by the University of Queensland.
A comprehensive collection of green algal Floras, ecological and monitoring
literature will be on show. |
