I recently joined a research team that is working on poultry mites.
Could I
appeal to you acariologists WORLDWIDE to write back and tell me which
species are found in your country? In particular, do you have Dermanyssus
gallinae or Ornithonyssus syviarum? Are they economically important?
Thanks in advance,
Ann

Dear all mite-people,
I am interested in certain water mites which are parasites of
dragonflies in NW of Spain. I understand that they are larval stages,
and I'm afraid that I will need free living adults to determine them
to
species.
I would like to get some information about keys for determination,
general biology of these mites, how to get the adults, and also,
possibility to rear them in the lab. Is there someone in the list that
could help me?. Is there someone working with these mites in Southern
Europe?. I will be very gratefull of receving this information.
Thanks in advance and have a nive week!.
Liliana.

Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am taking this opportunity to write you this letter with an appeal.
May I
introduce myself as a Research associate working in the Desert
Regional
station, Zoological Survey of India, Jodhpur. Presently I am carrying
out
taxonomic research on mites and ticks with special reference to plant
and soil
mites of the Thar Desert of Rajasthan. I completed my doctoral studies
on the
family Ascidae (Acarina : Mesostigmata).
Recently I have been invited by the African Acarology Association to
attend
the 2nd African Acarology Symposium to be held at Nairobi, Kenya from
16 -
18th December, 2001. My papers for the symposium were also accepted.
Now, to
attend the symposium I need a huge amount of money. I need nearly Rs.
80,000/-
(Eighty thousand rupees) i.e., $ 1,600.00 (One thousand six hundred
Dollar)
towards passage money, registration fee, etc. The Association is not
in a
position to provide me financial help. Presently I am drawing a consolidated
monthly fellowship of Rs. 9, 200/- (Nine thousand two hundred rupees
only)
i.e., $ 184.00. My institute will not provide me any money to
attend any
seminar / symposium abroad. My financial position is a constraint for
me to
attend the symposium.
My humble appeal to you is : Could you please contribute a portion
of the
above amount ?. I will be grateful to you for any financial assistance.
Alternatively, could you please suggest the names of any person/ institute/
organizations that will be of any help to me.
Waiting for your kind reply

Hallo everybody.
Can anybody tell me anything about Acaridae- or Histiostomatidae- copulations
of males with tritonymphs (or protonymphs)? What happens? Do
the males only
secure the juvenile female in order to fertilize afterwards the adult
female?
I would be thankable for each mail, that can help me.

**************** FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT ******************
The 5th International Symposium on Population Dynamics of Plant
Inhabiting Mites will be held in Orlando, Florida, USA for 4-5 days
in mid-May 2003 (exact dates to be determined). This Symposium
is a
follow-up of four previous symposia held in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands (1987 and 1991), Gilleleje, Denmark (1995), and Kyoto,
Japan(1999). It is a pleasure to convene this Symposium in North
American for the first time.
The Symposium aims to bring together scientists in various research
fields, to exchange ideas and to stimulate future research. Previous
symposia consisted of a small number of participants, less than 100
people, and were very successful and stimulating meetings, with
intensive discussions on selected topics. Presentations and
discussion have covered almost all areas of acarology: ecology,
evolutionary biology, molecular biology, pest management, chemical
ecology, behavior, and so on.
The purpose of this first announcement is to assess interest in
attending the Symposium and to solicit organizers for each day's
topics. As in past Symposia, each morning session will focus
on a
selected topic lead off by invited speakers, followed by shorter
submitted presentations in the afternoon.
If you are likely to attend this Symposium, please respond to me at
dmargoli@oznet.ksu.edu by 1 July 2001. Notification of interest
will
allow the organizers to contract for a reasonable number of rooms and
appropriate meeting facilities. [FYI, room rates will probably
be
ca. $100 per night]
If you wish to organize a morning session, please suggest the topic
and a few possible speakers to me by 15 August 2001. At past
Symposia topics have included: Phytophagous Mites and Their Hosts,
Biological Control, IPM, Behavior, Tritrophic Interactions, Genetics
and Molecular Biology, Life History Evolution, Acarology in Asia,
Evolutionary Ecology, Modelling, Community Ecology, Predator-Prey
Interactions.
I look forward to seeing you in Orlando in 2003!

Hi Dave,
I'm not sure Voss is still alive. The long years I was at Bishop, I
never
heard from him. Are the types you particularly need at Bishop? If they
are, the person to contact there is Al Samuelson (alsam@bishopmuseum.org).
The other option is to check Bishop's website and click on the type
database which should include the Acari types.
Aloha,
Sabina

Dear colleagues:
Could someone well versed in classical Greek/Latin advise me the root
forms of Tydeus and "tydaeus" as in Prototydaeus. Are they the same
or
different? I ask this because the genus Australotydaeus was originally
proposed with a "tydaeus" suffix and was subsequently emendated by
some
authors to Australotydeus while retaining "tydaeus" in Prototydaeus.
Thank you in advance.
