Robin
Erithacus rubecula

Family: Turdidae
Provenance: Native
Resident status: Partial Migrant / Passage Migrant / Winter Visitor
Conservation status: Low Conservation Concern
Protected status: Protected

Habitat:
Hedgerows, woodlands and margins, parks and gardens. Common in towns.

Distribution:
All of British Isles except extreme highlands and Shetlands.

Description:
One of the most familiar and best-loved British birds, both male and female possessing the distinctive red breast which juveniles lack. LENGTH: 14cm. VOICE: Song warbling, sometimes incorporating notes of other birds, often with a ‘peu-peu-peu’; ‘tick’ and ‘tsipp-ip’. EGG: White with red-brown speckles.

Natural History:
A highly territorial species, even outside the breeding season when females maintain their own territories. Song is used extensively to defend the territory, but females may gain access to male territories by adopting a submissive posture. NEST: The nest may be situated in almost any suitable nook, and is built by the female from moss, leaves and hair. REPRODUCTION: The female incubates the 5-6 eggs for 12-15 days, after which she feeds them with food brought by the male, who may take over the first brood when the female lays her second. Two broods is the norm, but three is not unknown. MOVEMENTS: Most are resident, but northern females may move south to the continent. Continental birds arrive in autumn, many passing through and wintering further south.
