Habitat:
Mixed and deciduous woodlands, hedgerows, parks and gardens.

Distribution:
Summer visitor, breeding over most of British Isles except highlands, Scottish islands, and parts of western Ireland.

Description:
A large warbler with a beautiful song, the female is browner than the basically grey male, and possesses a rust-red crown as opposed to the black crown of her mate. Juveniles are brown with yellowish underparts and a dark brown crown. LENGTH: 14cm. VOICE: Churring, and a repeated ‘tac-tac’; song is a rich an varied warble, said by some to rival the nightingale’s. EGG: White, buff or pale green with darker spots.

Natural History:
NEST: Both male and female build the nest, which is made from grasses lined with wool and roots, and situated in a bush or low in a tree. REPRODUCTION: Five eggs (occasionally 4-6) are laid in late May, and incubated by both parents for 12-13 days. Both male and female feed the chicks for a further 10-14 days. There is usually one brood per year, sometimes two. MOVEMENTS: Birds arrive in Britain from March, leaving in late summer. Most winter in the Mediterranean and Africa, but some – probably continental birds – stay in Britain.
