Member Excursion: The Specimens' Journey
Event type: tour
Join the Museum's Principal Curator of Mammals, Richard Sabin, on this exclusive, behind-the-scenes Member tour to learn how scientists collect, prepare and preserve specimens for the Mammals research collection.
The Museum holds a large number of our 80 million specimens in our off-site storage facility. You’ll tour the extensive mammal taxidermy collection featuring giraffes, buffalos and bears, followed by the skeletal collection of whales and dolphins.
For this special event, Richard Sabin will be opening the doors exclusively to Members for this rare opportunity to spend time at the facility.
Find out what happens when the Museum acquires a new specimen and learn about how our scientists make decisions about what to collect, and how they then prepare, process, and store the collection.
Light refreshments will be available on arrival and midway through the tour. Please email us if you have any special dietary requirements.
Please note that photography of any kind is not permitted at the off-site facility.
