Specimen handling workshop

Get hands-on with the Museum collections in this workshop for groups of up to 20 people.

Handle animals, plants, fossils and minerals from all around the world every as you delve into the Museum collections.

The workshop offers 3 optional sessions:

  1. Cultural and personal stories – participants share their personal experiences of the natural world. For example, collecting rocks and minerals, cooking with plants and animals, everyday life, habits and hobbies.

  2. Introduction to the Museum science collections – an introduction to the 5 science departments at the Museum: mineralogy, palaeontology, botany, zoology and entomology. Have a go at sorting specimens into the 5 collections.

  3. Developing scientific enquiry skills - visitors are encouraged to describe, reflect and speculate about specimens. These are the basic skills needed to develop an enquiring mind and inspire curiosity about nature.

The workshop is open to groups of up to 20 people, and to all ages from 5 years upwards. No previous knowledge is required.

Cost: free.

Duration: 30 minutes.
