We were the first UK museum to receive the ISO14001 environmental management accreditation for the whole of our estate.
Our vision for sustainability extends to our Exclusive Events business. We are constantly working with internal departments and our suppliers to minimise the impact of our events on the environment.
We evaluate the environmental performance of new suppliers, and work closely with current suppliers and contractors to encourage them to develop and supply environmentally preferable goods and services.
In line with the continuing environmental improvements, the Museum is working towards implementing the standard BS8901 in the Events Department. The BS8901 provides requirements for planning and managing sustainable events of all sizes and types, alongside advice on how to meet, and surpass, these requirements.
At the first ever Green500 and Better Buildings Partnership awards on 11 June 2009, the Mayor of London presented the Natural History Museum with a Platinum Award for actions covering building and energy management and carbon footprint reduction. The Museum has invested £3 million in a CHP energy system to harness heat from on-site power generation.
