  • Regular broadcaster on TV and radio
  • Main areas of research are environmental policy, environmental informatics, expert systems, the ecology and taxonomy of marine fishes and the international politics of the oceans and natural resources
  • Written extensively on the environment and the impacts of industrial and natural activities
  • Former Environment Research Council (NERC) Professorial Fellow in Mathematical Biology at University College London, and Director of the NERC Centre Coastal and Marine Sciences, and has served on research funding committees for both the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and NERC. Previously Committee member of the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Darwin Initiative
  • Previously a Board Member of the Environment Agency and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Earth Centre (UK)
  • Was Professor of Biological Sciences at Warwick University, Director of Theroetical Ecology at the Forschungszentrum Jülich and Senior Scientist in the Federal Government of Canada
