  • Former senior positions include Vice Chancellor, University of Hull; Director of the British Antarctic Survey; Director, Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge; Deputy Chief Executive, Natural Environment Research Council and Director General, The British Council
  • Has published extensively on his prime research interests in the earth sciences and climate change
  • Currently Visiting Professor at the University of London, Queen Mary and an Honorary Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Also Chairman of the South Georgia Association
  • Formerly President of the International Arctic Science Committee(1994-2002), Vice-President of the Royal Geographical Society (1991-1993) and a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
