Phase Two Underway

The Darwin Centre
Preliminary design work by CF Moller and Partners for Phase Two of the Darwin Centre

Phase Two passed two significant milestones during the year: a pledge of support from The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the appointment of a firm of architects.

In August 2001, we announced that the HLF had pledged £14.9 million for Phase Two and awarded another £600,000 for project development. Further donations, including £1 million from GlaxoSmithKline, have brought the total amount pledged to £28.4 million. Although we are making steady progress and are nearly halfway towards our target, we require a further £36.6 million of pledges.

The international architectural competition to design Phase Two has been won by CF Møller & Partners. The Danish practice's recent projects include an extension to the National Museum of Art in Copenhagen and a renovation of the Århus Natural History Museum. The plan is to house entomological and botanical collections within the curving surfaces of a `cocoon', itself encased within a transparent outer structure. This new building will link the nineteenth-century Waterhouse building to Phase One.
