The Museum makes its expertise available to clients on a commercial basis through NHM Consulting, which generated a financial surplus of £0.6 million for the year. The business is managed by technical sectors examples of their work are given below.
NHM Consulting worked on an export licence assessment connected to an auction of a valuable Carlo Bugatti walnut chair (circa 1900) at Sotheby's. The chair was inlaid with bone, yellow metal and copper, with ebonized wood details. Because the international trade of ivory was banned in 1989, the Museum was called in to certify that the inserts were indeed bone and not ivory. This was confirmed and the licence could be issued.
