Maximizing Income

Our retailing, catering, conference and events activities are significant sources of revenue. We refined our commercial strategy during the year and created a predictive business model to help us develop our catering and retail offers.

Improvements to our retailing environments, including a re-merchandise of the Museum bookshop, have resulted in a steady increase in sales. Retail turnover was given added impetus by the free admission policy introduced on 1 December, which brought more customers to our retail areas and also benefited our catering operations. Retail sales for the year were up by 36 per cent.
Observer Food Monthly article
Our Conference and Events team featured in an Observer Food Monthly article in December 2001.

Our conference and events business had another successful year. The Museum was the venue for several high profile events, including the Asian Rich List awards dinner, attended by HRH Prince Charles, and the Save the Children Fund event Festival of Trees, attended by HRH Princess Royal. The Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum at Tring more than doubled the revenue it generated from functions. In addition to its enduring popularity as a venue for children's parties, it is also increasingly favoured as an offbeat location for parties for adults and wedding receptions.
