During the year we made considerable headway in collating, digitizing and databasing our collections – a major undertaking which is opening up our treasures to people who cannot visit the Museum in person but do have access to the internet. We made progress with the Collection Level Description Project, which will provide a web-based catalogue of all the collections held by our science departments, libraries and archives. A grant from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation has funded the purchase of advanced equipment that we are using to digitize parts of our art collection.

We loaned 53,285 specimens from our collections to museums, institutions and exhibitions around the world.
