Funnel web preserved in Baltic amber
The Museum is the guardian of the national collection of over 70 million natural history specimens – a resource of immense importance to scientists and researchers around the world.

In 2002 the long-term future of the zoology collection was secured with the relocation of the Spirit Collection to the Darwin Centre, where optimum storage conditions can be maintained and access is greatly enhanced.

An extremely rare funnel web preserved in Baltic amber, together with the shed skin of the spider that made it around 37 million years ago. This is one of a collection of more than 1,200 amber specimens containing insects and spiders generously donated to the Museum this year by Mr Eric Horne.
