Museum Staff: Department of Zoology appointed Senior Assistant (lower section) 9 Sep 1872, replacing G R Gray in charge of the bird collections; 1st class assistant 21 Mar 1877; Assistant Keeper 18 Nov 1895, died in service 1909. He was author of many volumes of Catalogue of Birds in the British Museum (Natural History), of the Aves section of History of the Collections (1906). Went to Peterborough, then Loughborough Grammar School. Aged 16 came to London as a clerk at Messrs W H Smith & Son, where he stayed nearly 2 years, then moved to booksellers Bernard Quaritch. Aged 18 became librarian at the Zoological Society, stayed more than 5 years, before resigning in April 1872 to concentrate on writing. He was elected Officier de l'instruction publique 1901. In 1891 he was awarded the gold medal for science by the Emperor of Austria and the presidency of the Fourth International Ornithological Congress 1905.
