In 1899 He joined the Skeat expedition to the Malay archipelago. Moved to India in 1904 where he began working as Deputy Superintendent of the Indian Museum and in 1907 he accepted the position of Curator of the museum. He was awarded the C.I.E. in 1932 for 20 years of service to the museum. He was also the founder and director of the Zoological Survey of India. Obituary in 'Records of the Indian Museum' Vol. 27 1925 - 26 pp. 1 - 28. He was recommended as a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh however he passed away before he could receive it.
