Museum Staff: Appointed to Department of Zoology 1947; higher scientific officer 1968; Jean was born on 22 November 1930 in Wood Green, London and after leaving school, began her long career of 43 years in the Mammal Section of the Museum. Jean had a friendly out-going personality and was well-respected by her colleagues and the many international researchers whose visits to the collection she facilitated. Jean was a curator par excellence, who insisted on meticulous record keeping, trained junior staff by example, and introduced many of the techniques and curatorial methods in practice today. Her knowledge and care, particularly of the rodent collection, was first-class and she produced a detailed catalogue of the African rodent types. Her curatorial legacy lives on these many years beyond her retirement in 1990.
