1848 he joined the British Association and during the 1869 he acted as vice-president of the Biological Section. In brought the 1877 meeting to Plymouth where he was vice-president. He was elected a member of the Plymouth Institution 1852 and was a member of its council from 1853 - 1883. He served as secretary from 1854 - 1860 and as president 1861 - 1862 and 1869 - 1870. He was a curator of the museum and editor of 'Transactions' 1869 - 1883. 
He was also a founder of the Devonshire Association, senior general secretary in 1862 and president 1863. 

He was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society 1854 but later resigned. 1861 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. 1862 he undertook some work for the Trustees of the British Museum.</Activity>
