Graduated as MD in 1862, received the Gold Medal from the University of Edinburgh for his dissertation on Zoology and was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society the same year. In 1865 he was put in charge of the newly established Indian Museum, Calcutta. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1879. He resigned his position at the Indian Museum in 1886 and returned to Britain. He was involved with the Zoological Society of London serving on the council and acting as vice-president.
