He took radical steps to develop the Mineral Collection, largely through instituting exchanges with mineral dealers in the absence of purchase grants. He also ensured that the Museum obtained the Russell and Smith & Key Collections.Through his generosity he gave a considerable boost to the Mineralogy rare books collection.
